Police Public Advisory: Traffic Congestion & Road Safety

Good morning all

We are aware of ongoing congestion across parts of our road network, particularly during peak travel times. While delays can be frustrating, increased traffic also brings a higher risk of collisions, road rage incidents, and unsafe driving behaviours.

Your safety and the safety of others is our priority. Please take a moment to read the following advice to help keep everyone safe.

Key Safety Advice During Congestion

Stay patient and avoid aggressive driving
Tailgating, sudden lane changes, and speeding increase the risk of collisions.

Do not use your mobile phone while driving
Even in slow-moving traffic, distractions can lead to serious incidents.

Keep junctions clear (“Don’t block the box”)
Blocking junctions causes gridlock and delays emergency vehicles.

Be mindful of vulnerable road users
Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are harder to see in congested areas check carefully before moving.

Allow extra time for your journey
Rushing often leads to poor decision-making behind the wheel.

In the Event of an Incident

If it is safe to do so, move your vehicle to a safe location to avoid blocking the road

Turn on hazard lights to alert other drivers

Report any collision or dangerous driving to police via 101, or 999 in an emergency
